In his excellent guide to the Runes, Ralph Blum asks a question:
Are you suffering about your suffering?
How much of our angst is only about the fact that we have been emotionally inconvenienced? That we would have liked to be 'happy' at a moment, but found ourselves wrestling with a not-so-pleasant emotion?
And so the self-pity kicks in.
Then that grotesque self-important about our 'pain' kicks in. We feel important in this heavy pointed moment. We feel the corners and the edges of our emotions. Since we have no life anyway, and definitely no internal life, no bearings, no clear destination, no sense of moving, no propulsion, no velocity, we love the ugly side of life because it is a pseudo sense of weight, of substance, of something.
So we bring on the funk.
